What I’ve been up to: April 2017

We went to the beach! My first beach trip for the year, and it was at Laiya Coco Grove, Batangas. Spent a lot of time journaling and attempting to paint:

I gave them a washi watercolor artwork inspired by my sherbet hobonichi. I hope they like it:

Bits of Bliss: Design Sponge fangirling

I’ve always been a super fan of design sponge for years. I had a time when I visited her blog daily and got lost there for hours and hours–I loved all the beautiful homes and got inspired by all the DIYs and interviews. I recently bought her fantastic book “In the Company of Women” and am savoring it slowly because I don’t want it to the end.

image

I enjoy reading about what drives these extraordinary women, most of whom are my idols, and their journey as artists and entrepreneurs. I picked one of my favorites, Carrie Brownstein, and did a brush calligraphy piece based on what she said in her interview. Posted it on my instagram (@mabuhaydiy) account and after a few days, I got the surprise of my life. Grace Bonney herself reposted it in her instagram account! I’m still shaking and crying, I couldn’t believe my luck:

Is this the real life is this just fantasyyyy

Thank you Universe, for consistently creating magical moments like this. 😻🙌

Exploring the Universe: Vegas 2016

From New York, we flew to Cali and drove to Vegas. Amazed at how bright Vegas is at night, and how similar the morning weather is to Manila (except less humid and more windy).

I’m not a huge drinker but I do enjoy seeing colorful things and structures heh. My fave activity from Vegas would have to be sampling the 16 international coca-cola flavors at the Coke store! For only 8 dollars you can do this, and it was a fun bonding activity for the family:

image

I wrote notes in my journal about each one and my fave would have to be the Smart watermelon one from China and the Fanta Pineapple one from Greece.

image

Also enjoyed the colorfulness of the M&M store–resisted the urge to splurge inside, probably because I just ate a huge dinner before going here:

I got some tsum tsums, finally! These are mystery ones and I was hoping I could get the Cinderella one, but oh well. Look at that cute mermicorn tho:

image

Um, I got some plush tsum tsums too:

image

I enjoyed faux Paris and faux Venice and faux NY! I loved how you can travel to various places in a day haha:

I also enjoyed the fishes made from flowers at the Bellagio! The real fishes in Caesar’s Palace freaked me out a bit so this was more awesome for me haha:

Look at that beautiful ceiling!

I also thoroughly enjoyed the dancing fountain show:

Parkfest at Nayong Pilipino!

image

See that higante? That’s what the #ARTitasofManila and I painted for the Parkfest event at Nayong Pilipino. The event aims to revive our beloved Nayong Pilipino through showcasing the works of local creatives. We were very lucky to have been invited to be a part of this event. 🙂 We got the Mindanao higante and we scheduled a day for painting it and painted from 10 am to 8pm! Super worth it though, especially when we see that the crowd appreciated our efforts. 🙂

Here are photos of the other higantes:

With the artitas (missing Lai and Airees). We are eternally grateful for the help of Tita Geli and Tyang Ella too, thanks Titas!

There are so many beautiful artworks made by Filipino creatives in the park, and you can visit the park till 7pm today to see the works for yourself!

I joined Richelle’s chalk walk and started to draw this merbird using white chalk but unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish it. Happy that when I returned to it some kids have already colored some parts:

What I’ve been up to: April/May 2016

Having such a productive summer this year, filled with art and creative magic. 🙂

Started a series of after work capsule workshops for watercolor and here are my students! So proud of them:

I will be doing a journaling demo this May 7, in the Pagtitipon event above! See more details here: bit.ly/pagtitipon

image

I made the rubbercut bookplate and rubbercut stamps above, because I was so inspired by my collab with @kraftkart!  I designed book-themed stamps and she carved them by hand:

image

I also sold my handpainted gilded stickers at the BGC art mart this past weekend, sharing a booth with my good friend @ella_lama:

image

The day before that, my #artitas and I had a handmade sticker swap party and here’s my loot:

image

I have a handful of commission work that gets me excited and a trip coming up soon and I can’t be happier. Am also on day 14 of my #100daysofhandsketches in #the100dayproject and I am slowly being accustomed to drawing my hand without a pencil outline, so yay! 🙂

Hope you’re having a happy and productive summer as well. 🙂

Art journal artambay

I just had the most awesome day today, I met up with friends I mostly met via instagram (and through common friends) and we had an art journal date!

image

(Thank you Reg for this photo!)

We spent most of the time admiring the foreign art books (in languages we can’t understand haha) and each other’s art journals and planners. Then we played with stamps 🙂

image

Afterwards we went to all bookstores in the area 🙂 Got myself a notebook, a few stickers and Supermutant Magic Academy 🙂

Thanks, Universe! My heart is so happy.

Just add water: A watercolor fair 2015

I was so excited when I found out that Dianne was organizing a watercolor event. 🙂 🙌 I have attended a pointed pen meet before and a brush calligraphy meet and even an art materials meet but never a watercolor meet or a formal event so this was really awesome. We got to see amazing artists do demos and we got to ask them questions and learned a lot from them. I also enjoyed the part where we exchanged artist trading cards–so happy I got to exchange cards with so many talented local watercolorists. 🙂

Group photo! Also got to hang out for a quick artambay after with Manuel Jiongco, Paola and Megan—artists I admire. 🙂

image

Some of the artist trading cards I made, using metallic kuretake watercolor paint. 🙂

The beautiful cards I got in exchange:

I also treated myself to a gold Escoda travel brush and Shin Han Pwc paint from Artwhale. I painted some quick florals this morning:

P.s. Here’s a painting I did the other day, my first time to try negative painting. 🙂

Exploring the Universe: Japan 2015-Osaka!

I can’t get over how happy I was that we were able to visit one of my dream destinations last March: Japan! My excitement was beyond words–I was dreaming of this since I was a kid and I couldn’t believe we were finally going! There will be miracles when you believe!

I borrowed sd cards and filled around 10 gb with photos. In my excitement, most of those shots are blurry, though. I wanted to capture every moment but my hands wouldn’t cooperate, heh. I also wanted to fill my travel sketchbook with daily observations/food/people dorkwings but I couldn’t really decide if I wanted to draw or just stare at everything with happy tears streaming down my facee

(I did some drawings after, though, before I forget the happy memories. See my instagram for sneak peeks: @aphazia)

Here are some highlights of our Osaka trip. We went to Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo.
